Saas-Fee, often called the "Pearl of the Alps" (Die Perle der Alpen), is a renowned, picturesque village and municipality nestled in the Saas Valley in the canton of Valais, Switzerland.

Description & History
Description
Location: Saas-Fee is situated on a high mountain plateau at approximately 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level in the German-speaking part of Valais, Switzerland.

Unique Feature: Car-Free Village: The entire village center is car-free, a decision made in 1951 to eliminate air pollution. Visitors leave their vehicles in a parking garage or at a parking lot before the village entrance, contributing to the town's quiet, clean air, and romantic character.

The Four-Thousanders: It is famously surrounded by a total of 13 peaks above 4,000 meters (13,123 feet), the highest concentration in the Alps, including the majestic Dom (4,545 m), the highest mountain entirely within Switzerland.

Architecture: The village is characterized by well-preserved, traditional Swiss wood architecture.

History
Early Settlers: The history of the Saas Valley is closely linked to the Walser people, who settled in high-altitude valleys, clearing forests and building their typical wooden houses around the 13
th
century. The earliest mention of Saas-Fee is as vee in 1304.

Saracen Influence: In 939, the Saracens (Moors) invaded Valais. It is believed that place names like Monte Moro (Moors Mountain), Almagell, and Allalin may date from their time in the valley.

Pioneer of Tourism: The village's transition to a tourist destination was spearheaded by the local priest Johann Josef Imseng in the mid-19
th
century. He was a pioneering hotelier and mountain guide, and is credited as the first person to use skis in Switzerland in 1849.

The First Hotel: Saas-Fee officially began its age of tourism with the construction of its first hotel, Dom, in 1880/1881.

The Road and Car-Free Status: A road was approved and built to the village in the early 1950s, but locals made the historic decision to end it just outside the village, ensuring the center remained car-free to preserve the air quality and atmosphere.

Typical Foods and Cuisine
The local cuisine is based on the rich traditions of the Valais canton, featuring hearty alpine dishes and regional specialties:

Valais Raclette: A quintessential Valais dish where semi-hard cheese is melted (traditionally from a half-wheel) and scraped over boiled potatoes, served with pickles and pearl onions.

Fondue: The classic Swiss dish of melted cheese served in a communal pot, accompanied by bread for dipping.

Rösti: A simple and savory Swiss dish made of coarsely grated potatoes that are pan-fried into a crispy patty.

Valais Dried Meat (Viande séchée du Valais): Air-dried beef, rubbed with salt and spices, sliced paper-thin. It is a regional specialty, often served with rye bread and alpine cheese.

Cholera: Despite its unusual name (likely a dialect derivation of "coal storage"), this is a hearty savory pie made with puff or shortcrust pastry and a filling of potatoes, leeks, onions, apples, and strong Valais cheese.

Valais Platter: A selection of local cold cuts (like dried meat, raw ham, and Saas sausages), alpine cheese, pickles, and Valais rye bread.

Apricot Tart: A sweet treat featuring the local Valais apricots, known for their intense flavor thanks to the region's climate.

Valais Rye Bread: The oldest documented bread in Switzerland, traditionally baked with a strong, tangy flavor and a long shelf life.
